Art and Design Policy
AIMS We aim to ensure that all children produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. Our children should become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. They should evaluate creative works using the language of art, craft and design. They should know about great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Organisation and planning Art and Design is taught at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School through a themed approach. Assessments are ongoing and are carried out by the class teacher. Feedback is given verbally to the children. Assessments inform planning for next steps, differentiation and support. Our curriculum is planned to cover a one year cycle. Our long and medium term plans map out the skills to be covered and opportunities are given to revisit and practise skills.
Cross-curricular Links Work in art and design helps pupils to develop their motor skills, language skills, creative problem solving skills and inventiveness.
Assessment and reporting Assessment in art will involve ongoing monitoring of the children’s knowledge, understanding and skills throughout the year. Progress of children in EYFS is assessed against the early learning goals outlined in the EYFS statutory framework. The progress of children in KS1 and KS2 is assessed against the descriptors outlined in the national curriculum.
Resources Resources are stored on each floor in the resource room.
SEND All children should have full access to the Art curriculum. Children with SEND may need extra support to achieve this. Teachers will identify the children. They may need to sit close to supporting adults be and planned for additionally as necessary. Any health and safety issues need to be explained to the children who need it.
Equal Opportunities We are an inclusive school and we ensure that all children are given equal learning opportunities regardless of social class, gender, culture, race, disability or learning difficulties. All children will be supported by differentiation, adaptation or adult support.
