Curriculum Intent at Sacred Heart, Leigh

Introduction

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School is situated in the parish of St Edmund Arrowsmith. It is an inclusive school with eighteen nationalities of children attending. The school is a one and a half form entry school. The school has a broad and balanced curriculum, based on the National Curriculum for all the children in their care. Our bespoke curriculum ensures every child has the knowledge and life skills ready for the next stage in their learning journey.

Curriculum Implementation at Sacred Heart, Leigh

At Sacred Heart we use the Liverpool Archdiocese RE curriculum – COME AND SEE. RE is a core subject and underpins everything we do in the school. We work closely with the parishioners and catechists to support the children in preparation for the sacramental programme.

Sacred Heart will become a Sounds Write School by Summer 2022. The Sounds Write programme enables the teaching of phonics throughout the school. Staff work closely with speech and language therapists to ensure children’s communication skills are developed. We have a reading scheme which provides children with a wide range of reading materials and class novels that capture their imagination. Each class has a library containing texts they enjoy and develops their vocabulary. The children’s reading skills support them in their writing which is related to topic work where appropriate.

The White Rose Maths scheme is used to support the children in their mathematics learning, the small steps support the children in their learning of mathematical concepts. Fluency, reasoning and problem solving are all features of mathematics lessons which ensure deep learning is achieved.

Our Science and technology curriculum ensures the children develop the basic skills of these subjects that will support them in their next stage of learning. During each science lesson we encourage the children to have an enquiring mind based on the knowledge they have learnt and plan opportunities for children to work scientifically.

Using the National Curriculum as the basis we have developed a bespoke topic based curriculum that meets the needs of the children in the school and develops their skills as a geographer and historian. The children enjoy visiting new places and welcoming visitors to support them in their learning.

At Sacred Heart we teach French as an example of Modern Foreign Language. The children enjoy learning to sing, read and write in French. We have achieved the Primary Language Development Award – Enhancing. We also recognise and value the seventeen languages spoken by children in the school.

The school offers the children a chance to play an instrument through the Wider Opportunities programme. Individual music lessons for children also take place in school. Our school choir performs regularly in the local community. Everyone at Sacred Heart has worked hard to achieve the Silver Arts Award – the children enjoy creating pieces of art work that are on display around the school.

Sport and physical activity are a large part of our curriculum. The children enjoy the PE and games lessons they have in school and we have a range of extra-curricular sporting clubs they enjoy taking part in. We take part in all sporting events in the local area and are proud to have achieved the School Games Gold Award year on year.

At Sacred Heart, our intention for Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) is to ensure that all children receive a high quality and ambitious education regardless of their need or disability. We believe that it is vital that our pupils are equipped with the tools needed to become independent, inquisitive learners both in and out of the classroom.

The wellbeing of every child is at the heart of all we do at Sacred Heart, Leigh. We have a dedicated pastoral team that support the children, and their families, when needed. Our PSHE curriculum is interweaved with our RE scheme ensuring the children develop morally, socially and spiritually. We have a Wigan family welfare Councillor working in school that supports children when necessary.
