Cross-Curricular Links
PE supports all areas of the curriculum. In Maths, children are counting, scoring, assessing angles, measuring distances, problem-solving, working in grouping and symmetry/asymmetry in Dance. In English, children use appropriate vocabulary for performance, evaluation and coaching as well as describing movement and performance. In Science, children investigate the changes in their bodies when performing, how muscles work in the human body and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle for effective physical activity. In PSHE/RSE, children learn how to work with others effectively, well-being and mindfulness in Yoga, managing emotions, empathising and sharing fairly during games and in Outdoor & Adventurous Activities. In Music, children learn to count beats, select appropriate actions for moods and the dynamics of music in Dance and Movement. In Computing, children use various technology (stopwatches, I-pads, etc.) to record performances to assess and improve. In Geography, children learn compass points and direction through orienteering skills in Outdoor & Adventurous Activities. In History, children learn of the traditions of sport and cultural investigations with various sports.
Equal Opportunities
All children regardless of gender, race, culture, background, ability and identity have an entitlement to PE at an appropriate level. Children should experience success by being taught to their ability in PE.
Inclusion (Supporting children with SEND)
Children with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities will be differentiated for and supported to ensure their skills can develop to access the PE curriculum at an appropriate level. PE is a subject in which all children can find success and express themselves.
Resources
Resources are stored in the PE Store in the hall and around the hall.
Breakfast, Lunchtime and After School Clubs Throughout the year, Sacred Heart provides a number of activities that all children are welcome to attend. Many lunchtime clubs are used in preparation to play in inter-school competitions in the borough. Breakfast clubs for Football and Dance were introduced in 2017. Teaching staff and Premier Sport coaches organise and supervise these lunchtime and after school clubs to prepare for festivals and competitions organised by our local consortium Leigh, Lowton & Golborne and also Wigan East events organised by our School Sports Games Organiser:
KS1: Football Fencing Archery Tag Rugby League Dodgeball Boccia Athletics Orienteering Multi-skills Just Join In (Inclusion) Days
KS2: Football Girls Football Rugby League Tag Rugby League Pop Lacrosse Netball High 5s Netball Basketball Hockey Quiksticks Dodgeball Cross Country Boxing Rounders Orienteering Cricket Athletics New Age Curling Volleyball Tri-Golf Just Join In (Inclusion) Days
Play Leaders Y6 children apply to be play leaders organising and providing activities for KS1 during lunchtimes Monday to Thursday. This helps Y6 play leaders to become more independent and responsible. On Friday lunchtimes, KS1 children are encouraged to play games independently using the games play leaders have introduced. Y2 children are chosen to take on the role of play leading during playtimes Monday to Friday for EYFS and Y1 children.
Seasonal Events
All children take part in seasonal events to promote healthy lifestyles. Before Christmas, there is the Santa Dash. In autumn, children take on orienteering challenges based on Hallowe’en. In summer, the whole school takes part in Sports Day at Leigh Harriers. Good To Be Me Day also offers physical and mental challenges for the whole school. Groups are targeted in discussion with class teachers to develop well-being and self-confidence with David Morris of Become A Champion using boxing skills as a foundation. Other groups are further supported using specific teambuilding activities to promote cooperation and social skills.
Visiting Providers
We enhance our PE curriculum with visits from outside agencies such as Wigan Warriors, Leigh Centurions, Wigan Borough Be Well and Lancashire County Cricket Club adding specialised coaching to skills as well as signposting children to local clubs.
